Consulting
In-home programs
Can Learn Christian Academy offers consulting services to families with children with developmental and/or academics special needs. For over 20 years, I have worked with talented smart individuals with labels such as: Learning Disabled, Dyslexia-Dysgraphic-Dyscalculia, ADD/ADHD, Distractible, Hyperactive. As well as extensively with those who may have more severe dysfunctions such as Autism, Developmental Delay, Brain Injured, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), "Fall through the crack kids", Auditory or visual processing, cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, anxiety and so many more. They are very smart their brains just work differently!!
Many of my families prefer to home educate their children; parents can request a complete home school program. Toni can design programs to supplement the activities of a private or public school.
I have many Christian families who have chosen to educate their children at home to raise Godly children. Thus rejecting educational philosophies and activities that may incorporate pagan or New Age ideas or practices. Toni Hager is a Christian and agrees with, and sensitive to, these concerns,
An overview of the process
Consulting services are based on four months or trimesters. Each trimester begins with an evaluation. Evaluations are conducted by Toni Hager, B.A., B.S. NDS, an experienced neurodevelopment specialist of 20 years. The use of neurodevelopment models developed by researchers and organizations in the emerging science of neurodevelopment is implemented.
A home neurodevelopmental and education program is specifically designed for the client based on the information gathered in the evaluation, as well as from the client comprehensive developmental, medical, educational, nutritional, physiological, and social/behavioral history provided by the family.
The client or family is:
- Trained in methods to implement the program.
- Supported in the utilization of their program.
The family and Toni Hager maintain close communication during the four months to ensure that a child program is implemented correctly and to help the family keep their motivation. The program needs to be dynamically implemented to be most effective. Results happen when the program activities are performed consistently and properly.
Can Learn role is to provide evaluations, design and write programs and teach families in the implementation of the program activities, and to provide ongoing support and expertise for the client and families. The family role is to provide information on the client history and evaluation forms and any other additional new information as requested from time-to-time and receive training in program procedures.
It is valuable to communicate frequently with Toni, consistently implement the program activities, and schedule re-visits appointments each trimester.
Toni urges the family to remain on the program at least one year to maintain the skills the client has learned.
Our Services Include:
The evaluation:
A review of the client developmental, medical, educational, nutritional, physiological, and social/behavioral history.
An evaluation of the client function:
- an assessment of how the client receives, processes, stores and utilizes information,
- client tactile function, fine and gross motor skills,
- auditory perceptual function, visual perceptual function, auditory and visual processing skills,
- receptive and expressive language,
- short and long term memory, learning strengths and weaknesses, cognitive function and thinking skills,
- behavioral, and social functions.
- Where indicated, the academic abilities are assessed utilizing standardized achievement tests.
Following the assessment of the client, the parents and Toni Hager discuss the results, and together devise a plan for implementing the program.
The family is urged to video or audiotape, and write notes to retain the maximum amount of this information.
Development of individualized specific program:
- A program is designed specifically for the client based on the results of the evaluation and input from the parents.
- The total daily time to do the program is based on the family available time and circumstances, generally 1 to 11/2 hours daily. The program activities are listed by frequency (number of times per day), intensity (the activity) and duration (in minutes). Usually, program activities are short and implemented several times per day.
Unlike taking medications, this doesn't mean spread out throughout the day. Instead, finish round one of the activities then go on to round two.
The program addresses inefficiencies in neurological development, visual and auditory perception, tactile sensitivity and perception, mobility, manual function, speech and language, social development, behavior, and academics explicitly. Program activities influence dominance, increase processing, encourage growth, and teach academic subjects.
Toni teaches the family how to implement the program:
The family will receive the client program immediately after the evaluation. Then Toni teaches the parents or individuals how to carry out the activities with specific methods.
The family implements the program:
Neurodevelopmental programs are generally implemented five days per week during the four months between evaluations, Can Learn will be available to you through phone, text, and e-mail to help you carry out the program activities properly.
Program activities are recommendations only and are not medical, therapeutic, or psychological prescriptions. They are based on the experience of neurodevelopmentalists and represent our suggestions to the family. Every parent needs to assume the responsibility for their child and make their own decisions as to which specific techniques and methodologies they wish to utilize with their child.
Toni Hager is available to help you with your program questions by phone, text, or e- mail. I encourage you to call for advice within two weeks after starting your new program. After that, you should call in every two weeks so I can advise you as your child progresses. Monthly reports should be sent in at the end of each month, and you may occasionally receive a call or e-mail to give you valuable information or feedback. If at any time you have questions about the program, you should contact me as soon as possible.
Neither Toni Hager, nor Can Learn are licensed to practice medicine, psychology, or any specific therapy. Toni Hager is a neurodevelopmentalist with experience in the evaluation of neurodevelopmental function and the implementation of neurodevelopmental and education programs. If the family wishes to have or needs medical or other licensed professional advice, the family is encouraged to consult with a licensed physician or other licensed professional.
The family returns for a re-evaluation in four months:
The re-visit evaluation is scheduled with the family at the end of each review. Your family must maintain regular review evaluations to modify and adjust the program, and instructional level appropriate as your child progresses in neurodevelopment. After the re-visit, you will receive a plan based on that re-evaluation. This program may be modified for your child and your family current needs and based on the functional changes observed in the evaluation. After that, the process of parent instruction, implementation, and support continues once again.
